Ujjawala yojna is related to?
Explanation:
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship social welfare scheme launched by the Government of India on May 1, 2016, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. This scheme was introduced with the primary objective of providing clean cooking fuel to women from economically disadvantaged families across the country.
Under this scheme, the government provides free LPG connections to women belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. The main beneficiaries include women from families identified through the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011. The scheme aims to replace traditional cooking methods that use wood, coal, cow-dung cakes, and other biomass fuels with cleaner LPG connections.
The key objectives of the Ujjwala Yojana include reducing health hazards caused by indoor air pollution, empowering women and protecting their health, reducing the number of deaths due to unclean cooking fuel, and preventing young children from serious respiratory issues. The scheme also aims to reduce the drudgery of collecting firewood and cooking with traditional methods.
Initially, the target was to provide LPG connections to 5 crore BPL families by 2019. However, due to its success, the target was later revised to 8 crore connections. The scheme was further expanded in 2021 with Ujjwala 2.0, which aimed to provide additional 1 crore LPG connections. Under this scheme, eligible women receive a deposit-free LPG connection, which includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, booklet, safety hose, and installation charges absolutely free.
The eligibility criteria for the scheme include being a woman above 18 years of age, belonging to a BPL family, not having an LPG connection in the household already, and having a bank account. Priority is given to SC/ST households, PMAY beneficiaries, Antyodaya Anna Yojana beneficiaries, forest dwellers, Most Backward Classes, tea garden and ex-tea garden tribes, people residing in river islands, and residents of rural areas.
