JEE Main 2026 Rank List: How to Download, Key Details, Tie-Breaking Rules, Previous Year Toppers and Participating Colleges
The JEE Main 2026 Rank List is one of the most important documents for every engineering aspirant in India. Released by the National Testing Agency (NTA), it determines the All India Rank (AIR) and category ranks used for admissions to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and for qualifying for JEE Advanced 2026.
This guide provides complete information about how the rank list is prepared, how to check it, percentile-to-rank conversion, tie-breaking rules, counselling process, and expected cutoffs.
What is the JEE Main Rank List, and How is AIR Prepared?
The JEE Main 2026 Rank List is the official merit list prepared by the NTA based on candidates’ NTA percentile scores (not raw marks). It includes:
All India Rank (AIR)
Category Rank (GEN, OBC, SC, ST, EWS, PwD)
Subject-wise percentiles
Total NTA percentile score
This rank list is used for admissions, not your raw score or total marks.
How NTA Calculates Percentile?
Percentile is the foundation of the entire JEE Main ranking system. It is NOT the same as a percentage.
A Percentile means your performance relative to others in your shift.
Official Percentile Formula:
$\text{Percentile} = \frac{\text{Number of candidates with raw score ≤ your score}}{\text{Total candidates in that shift}} \times 100$
Key Insights:
Even if your raw marks are lower than someone in another shift, your percentile may be higher if your shift was harder.
Percentile ensures a normalised, fair ranking system across all shifts.
Percentile ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 is the highest possible value.

Procedure for Computing the JEE Main Rank List 2026 for Paper 1 (Simple Version)
The NTA prepares the JEE Main Rank List 2026 after converting the raw marks of candidates into NTA scores (percentiles).
Both the overall percentile and the subject-wise percentiles from each session are considered.
If a candidate has taken both sessions, the best score out of the two is used for preparing the final rank list.
If the candidate appears only once, the score of that single attempt is used.
JEE Main Tie-Breaking Procedure for Paper 1
If two or more students get the same percentile in Paper 1, NTA breaks the tie using the following rules:
The student with the higher Mathematics percentile gets the higher rank.
If the tie remains, the student with the higher Physics percentile gets preference.
If the tie still continues, the higher Chemistry percentile is considered.
If needed, the candidate with fewer incorrect answers overall is given a better rank.
Next, the candidate with fewer incorrect answers in Mathematics is preferred.
Then, fewer incorrect answers in Physics are checked.
Then, fewer incorrect answers in Chemistry are checked.
If the tie still remains, both candidates are given the same rank.
JEE Main Tie-Breaking Procedure for Paper 2
For Paper 2 (B.Arch and B.Plan), ties are solved using the following rules:
The candidate with the higher Mathematics percentile is given preference.
If the tie remains, the candidate with the higher Aptitude Test percentile is ranked higher.
If the tie continues, the Drawing Test score is considered for Paper 2A (B.Arch).
Then, candidates with fewer incorrect answers overall are preferred.
Next, fewer incorrect answers in Mathematics (Part I) are checked.
Then, fewer incorrect answers in the Aptitude Test (Part II) are considered.
If the tie still continues, candidates are given the same rank.

FAQs on JEE Main 2026 Rank List: Complete Guide to NTA Ranking, Percentile, Tie-Breaking, Cut-Off and Admission Process
1. When will the JEE Main 2026 rank list be released?
NTA will release the JEE Main 2026 rank list after the results of both sessions are announced and normalisation is completed. The final All India Rank (AIR) and state-wise toppers are usually published a few days after the Session 2 result.
2. Where can I download the JEE Main 2026 state-wise rank list PDF?
You can download the JEE Main 2026 state-wise rank list PDF from the official website jeemain.nta.ac.in once NTA publishes it. This page on Vedantu will also be updated with direct official details and structured tables for easy reference.
3. What details are given in the JEE Main rank list 2026?
The JEE Main rank list 2026 will show your All India Rank (AIR), category rank, state code of eligibility, NTA scores and other basic details like application number and candidate name.
4. How is the JEE Main rank list prepared if I appear in both sessions?
If you appear in both sessions of JEE Main, NTA takes your best NTA score among the two sessions, applies the normalisation process across all shifts, and then uses that score to prepare the final rank list and All India Rank.
5. Is there a separate JEE Main state-wise rank list for every state?
Yes. Along with the all-India list, NTA also publishes state-wise topper information and state code of eligibility data. This helps students see who topped JEE Main from their state and how their score compares to the highest score there.
6. What is the difference between JEE Main NTA score, percentile and rank?
The NTA score or percentile tells you how you performed compared to other candidates in that session. The rank list is prepared after combining and normalising scores from all sessions, and then assigning a unique All India Rank based on the final NTA score.
7. Does JEE Main 2026 rank list show category-wise ranks also?
Yes. In addition to the overall AIR, NTA usually provides category-wise ranks (GEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD), which are used during JoSAA and CSAB counselling for seat allocation as per reservation rules.
8. Are JEE Main rank list and merit list the same thing?
In practice, they are used in the same way. The JEE Main rank list or merit list is the final ordered list of candidates based on their normalised NTA scores, from which AIR and category ranks are taken for counselling.
9. Can my JEE Main rank change after revaluation or correction?
If NTA allows challenges to provisional answer keys and makes corrections before the final result, your NTA score and rank may change. Once the final result and rank list are declared, the ranks are considered final and are used for counselling.
10. How many students usually get 100 percentile in JEE Main?
Every year, a limited number of students across different states secure 100 NTA score. The exact number changes each year and is mentioned in NTA’s official press release along with the state-wise and category-wise topper lists.
11. Is the JEE Main 2026 rank list required for JoSAA counselling?
Yes. Your JEE Main All India Rank from the final rank list is mandatory for JoSAA and CSAB counselling. Institutes such as NITs, IIITs and GFTIs use this rank for preparing cut-offs and allocating seats.
12. Can I check the JEE Main rank list 2026 without downloading the PDF?
Yes. You can log in to the official JEE Main result portal using your application number and date of birth to view your individual score and rank online. This page on Vedantu also summarises the state-wise and category-wise topper data in table format so you don’t have to open multiple PDFs.
