Class 9 Science Chapter 1 Exploration: Entering the World of Secondary Science Questions and Answers

Pause and Ponder (NCERT Textbook Page No. 4)

Question 1: Think of a prediction you or your family made recently (for example, the outcome of a cricket match). Was it based on evidence and reasoning or solely on guesswork? How can scientific thinking improve such predictions?

Answer: Most everyday predictions are usually based on guesswork or personal belief. For example, someone in the family may say that India will win a cricket match because the team has strong players. This prediction may be partly based on experience, but it may not include complete evidence.

Scientific thinking can make such predictions more reliable. It uses facts, observations, records, weather conditions, pitch reports, player form, and team performance. For example, checking how a team has performed on a particular ground or against a specific opponent helps make the prediction more logical and evidence-based.

Pause and Ponder (NCERT Textbook Page No. 6)

Question 2: Describe one situation where an approximate answer is good enough, and one where you would need a very exact value.

Answer: An approximate answer is useful when we do not need complete accuracy. For example, while planning weekly grocery expenses, we may estimate that the cost will be around ₹2000. This rough estimate is enough for basic budgeting.

However, an exact value is necessary in situations like measuring medicine dosage. For example, if a child needs 5 ml of medicine, the exact amount must be measured carefully. Even a small mistake in dosage can be harmful, so accuracy is very important.

Question 3: Choose a real-life object (maybe a pressure cooker or a mobile phone) or a problem (maybe a traffic jam near your school). Make a sketch listing what kind of ideas from physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, or mathematics are involved. Show how at least two branches of science connect with your example.

Answer:

Example: Pressure Cooker

A pressure cooker uses ideas from different branches of science.

  • Physics: Heat and pressure increase inside the cooker. This raises the boiling point of water and helps the food cook faster.

  • Chemistry: Cooking causes chemical changes in food. These changes make the food softer, tastier, and easier to digest.

  • Mathematics: Mathematics is used to measure cooking time, temperature, water level, and the quantity of ingredients.

  • Connection: Physics and chemistry are closely connected in a pressure cooker. Increased pressure and heat, which are related to physics, speed up the chemical changes in food. This helps the food cook faster.

OR

Example: Mobile Phone

A mobile phone uses concepts from different branches of science.

  • Physics: It uses electricity, circuits, sound waves, and electromagnetic waves for communication.

  • Chemistry: The battery works through chemical reactions that store and supply energy.

  • Mathematics: Mathematics is used in coding, data processing, signal transmission, and calculations.

  • Connection: Physics and chemistry work together in a mobile phone. The battery converts chemical energy into electrical energy, which powers the phone and helps it function.

OR

Example: Traffic Jam near School

A traffic jam involves ideas from different branches of science.

  • Physics: Vehicles move, stop, accelerate, and slow down according to the laws of motion. Friction between tyres and the road affects stopping distance.

  • Mathematics: Mathematics is used to calculate traffic density, average speed, waiting time, and flow patterns.

  • Earth Science: Vehicle exhaust releases pollutants into the air, which can cause air pollution and affect the environment.

  • Connection: Physics and mathematics are connected in understanding traffic jams. The motion of vehicles can be studied using physics, while mathematics helps calculate speed, distance, and traffic flow. Together, they help us understand and manage traffic problems better.

Class 9 Science Chapter 1 Question Answer (Activities)

Activity 1.1: Let Us Model (NCERT Textbook Page No. 2)

Question 1: Suppose you ride a bicycle from your school to your home. You want to model the time it takes to go home from school. What details would you keep? What details could you ignore? Suggest why ignoring some details may actually be useful?

Answer: To model the time taken to travel from school to home on a bicycle, we should keep the important details that directly affect travel time. These include the distance between school and home, average cycling speed, road condition, traffic, slope of the road, and the number of stops on the way.

We can ignore details that do not affect the travel time much, such as the colour of the bicycle, brand of the bicycle, clothes worn by the rider, nearby buildings, trees, or shops.

Ignoring less important details is useful because it makes the model simpler and easier to understand. It helps us focus only on the main factors that influence the time taken to reach home.
